Fused Spur

A switched fused spur (also known as a fused connection unit, or FCU) is a small accessory that:

  • Spurs off an existing circuit (e.g. the socket ring main)
  • Contains a replaceable fuse (usually 3A, 5A or 13A)
  • Includes an on/off switch (often double-pole)
  • Can be labelled to show what it controls

You’ll see them most often in kitchens and utility rooms, usually above the worktop but feeding a device hidden below (like a washing machine or dishwasher).

They’re widely used because they combine:

  1. Local on/off control
  1. You can switch the appliance off quickly right where you are.
  2. In an emergency (burning smell from the dishwasher, a noisy boiler fan, a jammed waste disposal), you don’t have to run to the consumer unit and guess which breaker to turn off.
  3. The isolation is obvious and visible.
  1. Local identification
  1. The FCU is usually labelled: “Boiler”, “Dishwasher”, “Cooker Hood”, “Fridge/Freezer”, etc.
  2. Engineers and homeowners can clearly see which switch isolates which appliance.
  3. This reduces the chance of turning off the wrong item, especially important in busy kitchens or commercial environments.

    Labelled FCU
  1. Protection plus isolation
  1. The built-in fuseprovides extra protection tailored to the appliance cable and load.
  2. For example, a boiler might be protected by a 3A fuse even though it is on a 32A ring circuit.
  3. This helps protect both the appliance and its flex from overloads or faults.
  1. Compliance with manufacturer’s instructions
Many boiler, heater, and built-in appliance manuals specifically show a double pole switched fused spur as the preferred – and sometimes mandatory – method of connection.
  1. Following the manufacturer’s instructions is a BS 7671 requirement.
  2. Non-compliant connections can affect warranties and liability if something goes wrong.

This is why, in a modern kitchen or plant room, you tend to see a neat row of labelled switches on the splashback or wall. Each one is typically a switched FCU that provides both circuit protection and local isolation.

This company was recommended by some people on the Nextdoor website. I wanted new lights installed in my kitchen, dining room and conservatory. Karen got back to me within minutes of my email and both Electricians proved to be efficient, friendly and tidy workmen. I will be keeping their business card handy for future use.
